Please follow me as I takeover the #Smithsonian #Magazine #Instagram this week (@Smithsonianmagazine). I am a New York based documentary photographer, author and speaker. I travel to all regions of the world documenting #indigenous #cultures and issues concerning the #human #condition.
This week I will be sharing images from my newest and recently released photography book, “Human Tribe,” a monograph of 170 global portraits. It celebrates the diversity and connectivity of our beautiful and unique visual human tapestry. One of the many things I have learned during my years of global travel is that no matter how diverse we may look in appearance, from the exotic to the mundane, we basically have the same universal desires and concerns. Our needs are actually quite simple: to love and be loved; to have a useful place in our society with some meaningful and fulfilling occupation in our life; work that will hopefully provide us with enough money in our pocket to get by; food on the table; education, health and safety for ourselves, our family and our children. The freedom to be oneself is a right that creates the exquisiteness of our human race.
On January 2, 2000 my life was nearly cut short during a devastating bus accident on a remote jungle road in #Laos. I am alive today because of the kindness of strangers. This life-changing experience and my work in post disaster/conflict areas inspired me to give back to the communities that I photograph by connecting photography and philanthropy through establishing my own non-profit, Faces of Hope. This non-profit globally supports women and children’s rights by creating visual awareness and donating directly to grassroots organizations that help sustain them. Everyday I ask myself what kindness, big or small, can I do today for a stranger? What can you do?
Please post your global portraits to #Humantribe and let’s celebrate our diversity!
