This is not to be taken lightly. If you decide to look into this it will scar your mind. Unit 731 and Unit 100 were the two biological warfare research centers set up in spite of the Geneva Protocol of 1925 banning biological and chemical warfare. Led by Lieutenant-General Ishii Shiro, 3,000 Japanese researchers working at Unit 731’s headquarters in Harbin infected live human beings with diseases such as the plague and anthrax and then eviscerated them without anesthesia to see how the diseases infected human organs. Because of the Unit’s secret nature, there is no complete list of the experiments that were undertaken by Unit 731. Our #throwbackthursday this week is for World Baking Day. We're looking at the dark past of one of the most important ingredients in baking: sugar. The first sugarcane plantations were established in the New World by the Portuguese and the Spanish in the 16th century. The Dutch soon began colonizing parts of the Caribbean, followed by the British setting up a colony in Barbados in 1627. The Portuguese were the first to begin using slave labour on their plantations in Brazil, and soon the English and French were doing the same. It is estimated that over 15 million people were sold into slavery before this abominable practice was abolished in the 19th century. I want to share pics from my visit to the opening of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice yesterday. This was one of the most powerful things I have ever experienced and I feel that everyone should visit at least once, regardless of your race, creed or color. The National Memorial for Peace and Justice is the nation’s first memorial dedicated to the legacy of enslaved black people, people terrorized by lynching, African Americans humiliated by racial segregation and Jim Crow, and people of color burdened with contemporary presumptions of guilt and police violence. #eji #nationalmemorialforpeaceandjustice #darksideofhistory

Crișana (Körösvidék in Hungarian) is a historical region in Europe shared by Romania and Hungary. Its name is derived from the Criș (Körös) River and its three branches: Crișul Negru, Crișul Alb and Crișul Repede. The Romania-Hungary border cuts Crișana in two equal halves, one in each country. Crișana's natural boundaries are the Tisza River in the west, the Someș River in the north, the Apuseni Mountains in the east and the Mureș River in the south. The coat of arms of Crișana incorporates elements from its medieval history. The Turul bird is an ancient symbol of the Hungarians who conquered the region at the turn of the 9th century. According to their old legends, the Turul bird was the guardian spirit of Álmos, the first chieftain of the Magyar confederation, and by extension a totem of all Magyar tribes. It was Álmos who launched the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin and his son and successor Árpád who completed it and subjugated Crișana. The tower represents the fortress of Biharia which was the seat of Menumorut, the semi-legendary ruler of Crișana at the time of the Hungarians' arrival. Menumorut is only mentioned in one primary source, so there are some doubts regarding his historicity. If Menumorut existed, then he was of either Turkic, Slavic or Romanian extraction. Árpád asked Menumorut to surrender his lands to him, but the lord of Crișana refused and the Hungarians invaded his realm. After several battles and sieges, Menumorut was ultimately defeated. He surrendered once his fortress at Biharia was seized by the invaders and accepted Árpád's suzerainty. Menumorut was forced to marry his daughter to Zoltán, Árpád's son, and in return he was allowed to retain Biharia for the rest of his life. The blue field probably symbolizes the waters of the Criș River. #coatofarms #vexilology #heraldry #heraldic #symbols #crest #darksideofhistory #medieval

Nicolae Dunca was a Romanian revolutionary who fought in the 1848 Hungarian Revolution (on the Hungarian side), the Wars of Italian Unification, participating in the Expedition of the Thousand, and later in the American Civil War. Like many other "Forty-Eighters", Dunca walked the path of exile after the failure of the Revolution in Europe and ended up in America where he was granted political asylum. Once the Civil War broke out, he enlisted as a volunteer in the Union Army, being made captain in the 12th New York Infantry Regiment and aide-de-campe to Major General Fremont. Dunca was shot and killed while on picket duty at the Battle of Cross Keys (June 8, 1862). #unionarmy #federalarmy #italianhistory #ushistory #americanhistory #romanianhistory #iasi #darksideofhistory #militaryhistory #exile

One piece of the Memorial against War and Fascism (1988~1991) by Alfred Hrdlicka which commemorates the dark years when Austria came under Nazi rule (1938~1945). A sculpture with its head buried in the stone is Orpheus entering the underworld, meant to remind Austrians (and the rest of us) of the victims of Nazism... the consequences of not keeping our governments on track. Viewing this monument gains even more emotional impact when you realize what happened on this spot. During a WWII bombing attack, several hundred people were buried alive when the cellar they were using as shelter was demolished. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #memorial #war #sculpture #darksideofhistory #nazism #cityscape #visualsoflife #instatravel #travel #traveler #travelingram #travelgram #travelphotography #traveltheworld #traveling #traveller #igtravel #explore #neverstopexploring #wanderlust #iamtb #ig_europe #europe_focus_on #earthpix #living_europe #living_destinations #travellingthroughtheworld #Wien #Vienna #Austria 🇦🇹

German "trench club" from World War I. Trench clubs were crude, hand-made and often improvised melee weapons fashioned by both Entente and Central Powers soldiers who fought on the Western Front. These weapons were used alongside knives and other melee weapons in trench warfare, more specifically in nighttime trench raids. Some trench clubs had nails or spikes sticking out of them, others were wrapped in barbed wire and others had a metal object attached at the striking end (for example an empty hand grenade). Trench clubs proved to be quite deadly and efficient, especially when used to finish incapacipated enemy troops, like those afflicted or blinded by gas attacks.

"Old Kaitish [indigenous Australian] woman knocking tooth out of young girl to make her more attractive. All the girl's teeth were sound, but the men of the tribe had lost interest in teeth extraction as a magic mystery, and instead of making it a male privilege, as tongue-piercing still was, let women, and even girls, have their teeth knocked out. And they were keen on it. The tooth , having been loosened by pressure with a stick, is being knocked out with three sharp blows. Afterwards, the girl danced with pleasure. The Ladies of Téviec lived and died almost 7000 years ago in what is today Brittany, France. The women were between 25-35 years of age when they suffered a violent death, both displaying severe head injuries and still having arrowheads embedded in their bones. The circumstances of their deaths remain unknown; they could had been murdered by a rival clan or tribe, or they could had been sacrificed by their own people. The Ladies were buried with great care on the small island of Téviec, being placed under a roof of antlers. Their bodies were adorned with funerary jewelery made from marine shells. The burial was discovered by Marthe and Saint-Just Péquart in 1928.

During the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway in 1898, a pair of maneless Tsavo lions terrorized the construction workers for 9 months. The Tsavo man-eaters (as they were called) killed and devoured over 130 unfortunate Indian workers, usually dragging them from their tents at night. The workers built fences around their camp, made huge fires at night and tried all sorts of tricks to scare the Tsavo man-eaters, but to no avail. As attacks continued and more workers were eaten alive, panic spread and hundreds fled the site, halting construction. Luckily, Lieutenant-Colonel John Henry Patterson managed to ambush and shoot the Tsavo man-eaters in December 1898, after a few failed attempts to kill the beasts. Today, the man-eating Tsavo lions can be seen in the Field Museum of Natural History from Chicago.

A highly romantic depiction of Arminius and his Germanic warriors celebrating their victory over the Romans in the so-called Battle of Teutoburg Forest. In reality, Arminius, a fully Romanized German who was an officer in the Imperial Army and a respected high ranking member of Roman society, betrayed his fellow Romans and butchered them like cattle in the thick woodlands of Germania. Arminius knew that the poorly disciplined and poorly equipped Germanic warbands would be obliterated by the Roman war machine in an open confrontation. Subsequently, the traitor Arminius suffered defeat after defeat against Germanicus who led an extensive military campaign in Germania to avenge the betrayal from Teutoburg Forest. In the end Arminius the traitor was himself betrayed - the chiefs of various Germanic tribes he sought to subjugate to his will assassinated him. They were probably tired of fighting against the Romans or felt threatened by Arminius' ambitions.

“TURKS SLAUGHTER CHRISTIAN GREEKS Not Satisfied With Torture of Armenians, Turks Extend Cruelty to Greeks. Thousands of Greeks Deported From the Coast to Interior of Asia Minor. NEW YORK, Oct. 19.—Not sated by the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Armenians and Syrians, the Turk has also turned against the Greek Christians in his dominions and more than 700,000 have fallen a victim to persecution in the form of death, suffering or deportation, it was declared here today by Frank W. Jackson, of this city, chairman of the relief committee for Greeks of Asia Minor. He said the real details of these new Turkish atrocities were just beginning to leak out. “The story of the Greek deportation is not yet generally known,” said Mr. Jackson. “Quietly and gradually the same treatment is being meted out to the Greeks as to the Armenians. Although closely guarded, certain echoes of these horrors come out from time to time. “There were some two or three million Greeks in Asia Minor at the outbreak of the war in 1914, subject to Turkish rule. According to the latest reliable and authoritative accounts some seven to eight hundred thousand have been deported, mainly from the coast regions into the interior of Asia Minor.” The Lincoln Daily Star, October 19th 1917, page 7
