Since moving to Portland, I have had my mind (and my palate) expanded in about a billion directions. Back in Marshalltown, Iowa, there wasn't a lot of culinary innovation, and there were definitely no supper clubs—at least not ones that featured food outside of one of the many midwestern casserole varietals. I haven't been to many Portland supper clubs, so when I saw that @fullertonwines would be hosting a weekly one throughout March and April, I knew I'd need to be there.
Alex Fullerton, who makes the wine (and who was just named as rising star in the Portland beverage industry), is a good friend of ours, as is Jamie Cady, the chef for these dinners (and sous chef at a Portland favorite, Aviary). Jamie was the chef for a Fullerton dinner we went to last summer, and I've been daydreaming about his food ever since. For this supper club series, Jamie has created a collection of masterful Japanese-influenced menus that pair incredibly well with any and all of the Fullerton wines.
Alex is the gregarious complement to Jamie's even-keel, and the yin and yang of their pairing works wonderfully in this setting. Family and friends are at the center of Fullerton Wines, and attending one of their events is where you feel it most. Visiting their tasting room in NW Portland feels like going to your cool friend's house for dinner. The food is totally different (and I daresay, better) than what your mom makes, their parents let you drink, and you don't have to do the dishes afterwards.
If you find yourself with an open Wednesday night, you should drop everything and catch one of these events before they wrap up on May 8th. Tell Alex I sent you (and if you're lucky he might pour a little extra wine in your glass).
