When And What
Arbor Lodge, Portland, Oregon
✓ Mid June / early July - if you haven’t harvested your onions, garlic and shallots yet, do it now!
You can tell they’re ready when the stalk starts to brown, or folds over. Dig up with a trowel, if they loon like bulbs with a thin paper over them, ding! They’re ready! If the paper has started peeling away and opening up, you’re about a month too late. But no worries, gardening is a learning process, and you’ll be better for it next year.
Next step is to “cure” in the sun for 12 to 24 hours until the dirt is easy to shake off. Then hang to dry for 2 weeks in a dark place with good airflow, like a shed or garage.
Check out that teeny tiny garlic in the back right. I moved it too many times, and it didn’t have time to grow to full potential so I’m going to save it to plant the cloves in the fall! I’ll tell you all about it in October ::) #portland #oregon #plants #garlic #onions #shallots #seeds #gardening #fresh #vegetables #plantingcalendar #whenandwhattoplant
