~ Portrait of a Sweet, Adorable Killer: A Pied Butcherbird Parked in Our Driveway, May 17, 2018 ~ This is Bodgie, one of three daily butcherbird visitors to our place (more when they have kids). That beak, with which prey including insects & reptiles is caught, skewered & hung from branches, gives it its name (though the butcher's apron undoubtedly helps). Pied butchers have one of the sweetest & most diverse repertoires of song of any bird, melodies familiar to most Australians. An interesting piece of trivia is that in evolutionary terms, songbirds worldwide actually began right here on this continent. Unlike most songbirds, both sexes of butcherbirds sing. Exceptionally.
