Our bodies are amazing because they know when we are hungry and when we’re full. They were created to do that. It’s a natural process. Isn’t that incredible? 🙌🏻That means I don’t have to count calories or restrict certain foods. It means that my body knows how to regulate those things all by itself. It’ll tell me what it needs, when it needs fuel. I just need to learn how to listen to it, which is a difficult thing to do after not really listening to what it’s been telling me for years. It’s a journey I’m on + I’ll definitely make mistakes along the way but I’m ready to treat my body with a bit more kindness + understanding. ✨ . So I’m saying thanks with @kauai by choosing to fill my body with nutritious food to satisfy + fuel it, by learning to listen to its cues a little better + by choosing to treat it with kindness. 💕 . . F A T I G U E // This topic’s been on my mind lately. I feel like sometimes we miss the point when we talk about it. Fatigue, low energy, low motivation and general tiredness are endemic amongst the women I treat and the women I connect with outside of my work. There are many things we do to contribute to this situation, and many things we can do to alleviate it. BUT: ignoring the big picture for a sec, what do you do *in the moment* when you feel tired/exhausted/fatigued? • do you play a familiar reel of mental chatter that says ‘stop being so lazy, there’s stuff that needs to get done, no time to rest, why am I feeling like this, what do I need... {coffee/exercise/sugar/kick up the butt etc}... 🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️🙋‍♀️ • or do you simply accept that you’re tired and that the (immediate) solution is .. you guessed it ... rest? 🤷‍♀️ I kid you not, when this first occurred to me - earlier this week - it was a PROFOUND shift in my thinking. I have always been a problem solver, driven by ‘why?’ - so I’d always figure out why I was tired, and how to fix it so I wasn’t tired again tomorrow - but i NEVER allowed myself to actually _be_ tired in that moment. Not even an option. I just kept trying to come up with ways to make myself stop feeling tired so I could soldier on. So! While I know it’s not going to change for me straight away, I also know that now I’m aware of it, I will start to be more patient and gentle with myself when I feel tired. 🤔I think this is where we go wrong with the whole self-care thing - we think of self care very differently to the way we care for others. If your child/mother/spouse told you they were exhausted, would you tell them to soldier on and get an early night and maybe schedule a massage? Or would you make sure they actually rested when they needed to? Anyway!! Please take this as your permission to stop and rest when your body needs it, rather than looking for the next best energy-boosting supplement or sleep hack to keep you going. #wellnesssimplified #selfcare

Made little Muesli bites today and DAYUMMMMMMMM they are good 😏 all that’s in them is dark chocolate, oats, macadamia’s, dried apricots (I went to @kunara_organic_marketplace and got a little carried away with fillings... 🙊) honey 🍯 & a little cacao butter! They’re super easy to make too! 👇🏻👇🏻 . . . . . Pre-heat the oven to 180°C Mix all the dry ingredients in a large bowl Heat the honey and butter in a small pan Pour the melted honey & butter over the dry ingredients and mix well Press into a lined tray and sprinkle dark chocolate over the top Bake for 20-25 minutes Spread melted dark chocolate over the top with a spoon and allow to cook before cutting (I popped this in the freezer cause it’s so damn hot and the chocolate kept melting!

Thank you for your wise words @whole_embodied_therapistRepost from @whole_embodied_therapist -- Diets teach us not to trust our bodies, not to listen to what would taste good or feel good. Diets claim that they know better what your body needs than your actual body. They beg you to exchange the intuitive wisdom in your body for a set of rules devised by someone not living in your body! . And this is ALL diets, though the diet industry is sneaky and likes to create all types of alternative names like “lifestyle changes,” “wellness plans” etc...but if it’s a way of eating that says “eat this, not that,” or it labels certain foods as superior to others (“healthy,” “clean,” etc) it’s a diet. #truth . . I am no fan of diets but I have a lot of compassion for those who are drawn to them! The diet industry is a multi-BILLION dollar industry! Dieting is engrained in our culture. You’re not bad if you’re drawn to a diet!! It’s the system- not you!! I oppose diets because diets harm people- they harmed me and still harm too many great people for whom I really care...that makes me angry! (Anger is a healthy emotion when someone is being harmed, FYI) . And while I dislike diets, it’s not my place to tell you what to do with your body. I don’t live in your body. You are the expert on you! I’d simply encourage you to consider that diets are NOT harmless! All diets require you to trust an expert outside yourself. They erode trust in your body’s ability to guide you to nourishment & wellbeing. Diets disconnect you from your body’s intuitive wisdom. And one more thing- diets also fail 95%+ of the time! . Healing my relationship with my body and food has been so much easier because I have this man’s unconditional love and support. ❤️ I don’t thank him enough. If you are healing from a disordered relationship with food/body, make sure you have support. I used to hold everything I was thinking and feeling inside, but I finally realized that I didn’t need to- that having support and just being open was what I needed to heal. Don’t be embarrassed or ashamed to share it with someone. Don’t hide it. There’s something beautiful in opening up and being vulnerable. It’s helped me accept who I am and where I am at in this journey. It’s connected me with others who have had the same struggles. It’s helped me make new friends and find a way to help others. It’s been truly so freeing to finally talk about it openly. You would be surprised how many other women struggle too. I was. We can beat this together. Changing our bodies won’t change our body image. It’s much deeper. So find someone you can talk to and try being vulnerable. We throw the term “healthy” around all the time, but what does it really mean? I like this definition from the World Health Organization, “Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” When we think of health we often focus on the number we see on the scale, how fit we are or the absence of illness. But being healthy means so much more than that! When we set goals to eat “better” or exercise more or lose weight, sometimes it can negatively affect our emotional state or our ability to be present and engage fully in our relationships. So as we start a new year and many are setting goals to be “physically” healthier, don’t let those goals crowd out the other aspects of your health that are equally as important! My New Years resolution for this year, or rather my “theme” for 2018–I got this idea from a mentor—is to find balance. In all my goals and endeavors for this year, especially starting the year out as a new momma 🤗 I hope to create balance between my physical, mental and social well-being. If you had a theme for 2018, what would it be? :)

For the girl who never liked cake...birthday apple galette! I can’t think of a better way to ring in 34 than with family and a galette😌 :: My mom, sister, and niece lined the cake with candles only to discover the wax was melting into the galette. We quickly pulled them out, dug gopher holes around each wax puddle, put one candle in the middle, dang the quickest rendition of happy birthday 🎶, and then ate our delicious apple galette with faint remnants of pink and blue sprinkled throughout our gopher holes. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Still delicious and it made for a good quick scramble to pull them out. :: You do you. My niece asked me incredulously, “You don’t like cake?!?” Nope. It led to a good conversation over how I never really enjoyed it and much prefer different types of desserts. Just because it’s a tradition doesn’t mean you can’t question or change it. :: @bonappetitmag brown butter apple galette recipe 👌🏻

@Regrann from @nom_nomaste.llc - If you are struggling or have struggled with negative body image, disordered eating or an eating disorder seeing the number on the scale can be a huge trigger. 99% of the time when you go to the doctor the doctor does not need to know your weight. I have often had clients try to do the blind weight thing- where you step on backwards, but if the team of nurses and physicians are not trained around this they may be well meaning but so often make comments about weight even if you try not to see it. For that reason, I encourage you to ask to not be weighed. You have that right and the doctor really doesn’t need your weight most of the time. Self-care wears many masks. Today self-care looked like taking the afternoon off to sleep and lay on the couch- Something I NEVER do because who has time for that?! My body hurt, my head felt like it was going to explode, and I couldn't breathe. So I decided to be a grown ass adult and take care of myself. I'm feeling a little better (finally), trying all sorts of things to clear out sinuses, and letting Dad be the primary parent. It's good to put yourself first. Especially when you're sick.

I’m damn proud of this girl for rising above the “fitspo” ideal and pursuing mental health and emotional healing instead🤗 . . I put “fitness” in quotes purposefully because our perception of what being fit means is convoluted these days. . . People associate fit females with rock solid abs, a perky butt, and a slender physique. But this says NOTHING about how a person feels, how they perform, how much energy they have, their mental state, their brain function, their gut health, their hormones, ETC-FUCKI-ETERA. . . And in dire pursuit of the perfect body, it’s easy to neglect the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health #BeenThereDoneThat . . I’m not saying you can’t have the body AND be healthy in every way, but it’s definitely hard to not get caught up in obsessive behaviors. . . My point is, find a balance you can keep and you’ll be way happier in the long-run😇

Tonight, I’m sharing a dessert recipe in preparation for #NationalPeanutButterDay tomorrow!😋 Let me introduce to you... Peanut Butter Trail Mix Blondies 🤗 I used a recipe online from @bobsredmill but tweaked a few ingredients to what I had in my kitchen! Ingredients: 1/2 cup coconut oil melted 1 egg 1/2 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup @pbfit.official Peanut Butter Powder 3/4 cup creamy peanut butter 1/4 tsp salt 1 cup all purpose flour 1 cup @powerupsnacks trail mix 1. Grease a square 9 inch baking pan 2. Preheat oven to 350*F 3. Combine melted coconut oil, salt, sugar, and Pb powder with wooden spoon. 4. Mix in egg and creamy Pb until combined. 5. Add in all purpose flour 1/4 cup at a time. 6. Fold in trail mix. 7. Bake for about 30 minutes. Turn oven off and leave inside for another 5 minutes. Jared and I love these on their own, but we also enjoy them crumbled over ICECREAM 🍦 If you try them, tag me, and let me know how you like them! Comparison has been a recurring theme with a lot of my clients this past week. In fact, it happened while eating a snack with one of my clients today. But rather than allow this comparison to steal his joy, I am proud to say he was able to rationalize his way out of it. . On days like today, when I have back-to-back clients and hardly a spare moment to use the restroom, I end up eating with my clients. When I pulled out a bag of trail mix this afternoon, I noticed my client’s eyes go wide. When I questioned his reaction, he explained he was shocked by what I was eating, as well as the serving size. However, the client immediately followed this statement by explaining this wasn’t fair of him—he didn’t know how hungry I was, what I had eaten prior to this snack, when I’d have a chance to eat again, or if I was honoring my intuitive eating cues. . Interactions like this are “proud mama” moments that I cherish. I am honored to play a part in the recovery process of so many—to help them push away disordered thoughts, find freedom from food, and embrace life to the fullest. . This is my truth. What’s yours?

Let's talk about discomfort. Lately, I've been feeling a lot of it. Discomfort in situations, discomfort with myself, discomfort with uncertainty about what's coming. It's no fun. Everyone likes to be comfortable. But something I like to remember during these times (and they always come in waves, they come and go) is that they're more than just some unfortunate time to survive through. They're a sign that things are changing - that YOU are changing. When I look back, I realize that the greatest things in my life thus far came from discomfort. No one ever got anywhere worth going by feeling cozy and calm and the same. . So here's to feeling UNcozy. @Regrann from @bravebodylove - Those of us who don't work in offices or schools or places where women incessantly talk about their weight/latest diets are lucky. Since I work for myself and get to choose my company I forget how ubiquitous diet culture is. That means it's everywhere! And it's not just affecting women. . . Recently I was at a fundraiser that involved desserts. Almost every person I talked to mentioned something about how "bad" the desserts were, or they were for eating them. An older man commented on his thin former workmates and how that in retirement he can eat what he wants. Yet, he felt guilty about it. . . Since I'm not around this everyday, I forget how awful the diet pressure is. It was amazing to me the angst in all these different people due to a simple cupcake! . . We have a LOT of work to do still. I was thinking of hanging up all this work I do in this area bc now there are so many amazing coaches, dieticians, therapists, trainers, activists, etc working to end diet culture and all it entails. I was thinking that I'm not really needed anymore. Everyone KNOWS about this now, right? . . Nope. Not even close. YOU may get it, but your workmate, mom, neighbor... probably doesn't. . . But honestly, most days I'm tired of it. I'm tired of talking about it, explaining, teaching against the "common wisdom", etc. Unfortunately, once you know something you can't unknown it! . . I binged. . . It’s been so long I can’t even remember the last time it happened. It wasn’t a huge one by my standards but it’s was excessive, mindless eating. I pulled out a bag of trail mix that had been sitting in the cupboard for weeks. It was nuts, dried cranberries and dark chocolate. I stood at the counter for 5 straight minutes, pouring handful after handful after handful into my mouth. . . At first I tried to fight the binge - to stop it. But eventually I gave myself into it. I folded. . . When I hit my stopping point, I put the bag away, checked on dinner, ate one of my kid’s cheese sticks, and then ate an enormous plate of food when it was ready. . . At dinner, my husband asked me what was wrong and told me I seemed ‘defeated’ over something. I just shrugged it off. Can you believe how easily my anger and disappointment shows through?! . . I can’t be sure of what happened but I’ve got a pretty good guess. You see, it was 65 degrees today. It was warm enough to remind me that I could not hide this body under big sweaters and thick jackets forever. As the weather warms, I’ll be forced to accept this body in a whole night light. I began this journey late last summer and have done all of my body acceptance work under the cloak of winter. I’ve learned to accept my thighs only while they were hidden under long pants and have had the luxury of ignoring my flabby arms hidden under long sleeve shirts. . . All of a sudden, I was hit with an intense fear that I’ll be starting at square one come summer. That I’ll be reminded of the body I hate, of the bikini bodies around me, of the diets that promise me I’ll one day look like them. . . I did Pilates today and I spent the time scolding myself for not doing something tougher. I ran upstairs and weighed myself shortly after. Then I spent a ridiculous pint of time staring at my naked body in the mirror, wholly disgusted with what I saw. I couldn’t believe how big my belly was, how my thighs were covered I cellulite. I was grossed out and embarrassed for kidding myself I was acceptable all these many months. . . I’m scared for summer.

We are all warriors in some form or another. Those of us who have struggled with eating disorders, those who have battled depression, those who question what their purpose is, those who deal with anxiety, or whatever the case may be. Just remember that there is a strength within you that can defeat any seeming obstacle in your path, & each day that you forge ahead in your journey, you are a warrior. . A Course in Miracles (my favorite text, & what has helped me to heal a lot of my shit), says: “There is a place in you where there is perfect peace. There is a place in you where nothing is impossible. There is a strength in you where the strength of God abides.” . Try to let that sink in, even if you don’t believe it, or are unsure & have no idea how that could be possible. That is your warrior within. The power of God within you. And if you don’t believe in God, substitute whatever word you want to substitute. It doesn’t matter. . Guess what you DON’T need to be healthy... coconut bowls, superfoods, 7-layer smoothies or any smoothies for that matter. It seems health food has become a rather expensive fashion show when really, health can be so much simpler (and cheaper!). It’s no wonder people think that being healthy is too expensive! Don’t get me wrong, I looooove smoothies - but that’s the reason I have them. They are not essential for health and you’re not unhealthy if you don’t have them. No! Of course you haven’t! So why do we ask people to diet down to a size they would never naturally reach? . . I will never forget the day I was sitting in my undergrad nutrition class and my nutrition professor stated simply... “some people are chihuahuas and some are St. Bernard’s, that’s ok, let’s learn to be ok with that”. . . That simple statement changed the way I saw the world in an instant and today I hope it changed yours. We assume because someone is different they aren’t as smart, pretty, motivated (the list is endless) as someone else. . . The best kinds of meals are ones you can make and then re heat later in the week. Currently eating this out of a tupperware before class so not the prettiest but still guuuud😋 - •pre heat oven to 420F •in a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp ghee/coconut oil/butter. Cube 1 large sweet potato. Add it to skillet with some sea salt (I also added rosemary) and cook for about 5 min •half a bunch of Brussels and add to skillet. Cook another 5 minutes or until the taters and sprouts are tender. Make small openings in the veggies, and crack 3 eggs directly on top. •place in oven for about 5-10 min or until eggs are cooked to your liking. •I topped mine with avocado, @kitehillfoods almond ricotta, and chipotle @bitchinsauce - and had it over quinoa

I love matcha but also let’s talk money 👇🏼 . . So Instagram is fun, but it definitely isn’t how I support myself. My real job is virtual administrative assistance, content management, and online community work. This includes a whole bunch of stuff (podcast support, blogging, Instagram memes and posts, client support, etc), and I currently focus on the Health at Every Size, intuitive eating, eating disorder recovery community. It’s freelance so I have time for school, and the subject matter is in my area of interest, so it’s a pretty great gig. . . In 2018 I decided I wanted to switch things up a bit. Instead of working mostly for nutritionists, I want to help support activists and advocates fighting for body liberation. My future lies in that realm, and so I want to start making my way down that path professionally. . . So if you work in body activism—which can mean many things, including running an internet presence focused on marginalized bodies, running a podcast that talks about fat liberation or race etc, a writer and speaker who focuses on feminist issues, etc—then come say 👋🏼 . .
