Hawker Chan Melbourne
I've been waiting months for the opening of Hawker Chan in Melbourne. So when they had their soft launch, I made sure to be one of the first ones there - after all this hype, I was curious to see what this Michelin star hawker restaurant was all about!
For those who don't know, Hawker Chan is a Singaporean street vendor that is the first to be awarded a Michelin star. They've since been all the rave when it comes to cheap eats. So when chef Chan Hon Meng decided to open up a restaurant in Melbourne, it's to be expected that the crowds will go crazy. And I was part of that crowd.
If you do decide to visit, be prepared to wait. They have an efficient system in place and there's a big screen showing you where you are in the queue, but the wait is still very long considering all the elements have already been prepared.
Their specialty is the Soy Sauce Chicken and Rice which is only $6.80 (bear in mind it's not a huge serving). The secret sauce is what makes the dish special - it is made alone by the chef in a locked, blocked out room in Singapore then shipped to Melbourne - crazy much?? The chicken was cooked perfectly and amazingly tender. I have not come across many restaurants that can cook their chicken this tender before so I was impressed! In terms of flavour, the secret soy was nice but not spectacular. I also ordered a side of crispy skin pork and found it ok - I've had better at other Chinese restaurants.
The noodles that I ordered was well cooked but the sauce was much too sweet which was disappointing as it drowned the whole dish.
Perhaps I'm being overly critical as I had super high expectations from a Michelin starred restaurant, but I guess it's worth the visit to know what the hype is all about. So there you go, I can now tick Hawker Chan off my list! | Price : Approx $10pp |
| Parking : CBD paid parking |
| Prams : Probably not the best place for kids during this busy grand opening period but there is space to push prams in |
