Recently, after hearing a colleague mention a street name that sounded familiar but I couldn't place, I asked him where it was. A proper Dub (who used to ask me when I was a kid, "No, what's your REAL name... Like your ACTUAL name?"), he turns and says to me : "Righ'... Tadhg, d'ya know the Five Lamps?"
"Hang yer bollix off dem!" I realised I'd walked into the oldest Dublin trick in the book, but I was too late to save myself. And now for a brief history : The Five Lamps were put in place around 1880. They were originally part of a fountain which was funded through a bequest of General Henry Hall, who had served in the army and as a Governor in India for many years.
He died on the 22 August 1875 and left £200 in his will for the provision of two drinking fountains "to encourage sobriety". (Not sure how well that worked out.) There were originally little cups hanging from chains so people could drink from the fountain easily. Communal cups. Different times.
