The whitening of beauty in Asia
A 4 year old was told she couldnât be beautiful as she was not fair and had curly hair by other 4 year olds. This kind of discriminating racism is not new. I grew up facing similar statements but one thing was different, I did see darker skinned women on screen.
When I was younger the tamil film industry had stunning talented dark skin actresses like Banupriya, Radhika, Suhashini, Rohini, Madhavi, Shalini, Nanditha Das and Saritha. All leading women with dozens of movies under their name. Most of all I grew up seeing Silk Smitha as the sexiest women on screen.
Then, Malay singers and actresses were darker skinned too or light brown skinned. There was Ziana Zain, Fauzia Latiff, Zaiton Sameon, Sharifah Aini, Sanisah Huri, Azizah Aziz as well.
I was looking through the current list of Malay actresses and there is not even one darker skinned actress. Even shocking, some of the names I mentioned above have all miraculously turned white.
I only found Dayang Nurhaliza, Zee Avi and Yuna who are darker skinned in the Malay entertainment industry.
In the Tamil film industry we only have Amala Paul and increasingly fairer looking Nayanthara in the leading ladies list. Dhanshika, Aiswarya Rajesh, Bindu Madhavi donât really get the best offers.
I know we were always fair skinned obsessed but when did we get this bad?? And you wonder how brands like Watson, Fair and lovely, and Slimme White get away with making discriminative ads on how dark skin is ugly and only fair skin is beautiful.
Ads, movies rarely feature darker skin women unless they want to show them as a before image. Otherwise you would get a pan Asian to represent indian women. Unfortunately Malay women only have fair and pale women to look at.
Seriously entertainers, the entertainment industry need to start acting responsible but why would they when they themselves have launched whitening creams for even children!
The Malaysian Health Ministry's National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Department (NPRA) has been increasing efforts to ban these instant cosmetic producers whose products contain harmful substance.
