“Unusual, Unknown and Aged Wines of Carneros” @carneroswine tasting yesterday #onlyinsf included @cuvaison_wine’s (unusual) all-concrete Sauvignon Blanc; @schugwinery’s (unknown) St. Laurent, a grape plentiful in Europe but scarce in CA; and the 2002 @saintsburywinery and 2010 @zdwines (aged) Pinot Noirs. Well, we also got something Unheard Of: Cuvaison’s label description of the Sauv Blanc as “méthode béton,” which sounds like a fancy French wine term but, winemaker Steve Rogstad informed us, actually means “concrete method”! • • • Among the other #unusualwines to remind us that #carneroswine is not just Chardonnay and Pinot Noir: @bouchaine_vineyards’ 2015 Estate Pinot Meunier; @starmontwinery’s 2015 Syrah, which I guess is less usual these days if not unusual, and @artesawinery’s Albariño. Doorway to @quixotewinery tasting room. The winery’s Vienna-born artist-architect, Friedensreich Hundertwasser, hated straight lines: he called them “godless” because, he said, they don’t occur in nature. He stuck to his guns, even with the roofline (2) and what’s now a tasting space (3) inside. Onion dome (4) was a #Hundertwasser trademark, too, as were sod roofs (5)—those really are olive trees (6) growing up there. Triple-stack w/two panos (7) shows (top to bottom) building with @stagsleapava palisades in the background, shot from sod roof, and Hundertwasser’s original model for the site, which contains the production facility (to left in model) and tasting room (under the dome). Want that shower (8) for our next house. • • • • Aaron Pott was consulting winemaker here for years; now Philippe Melka is, with the talented @bobby_t82 (Robert Smith) serving as estate winemaker. #QuixoteWinery is known for #CabernetSauvignon and #PetiteSirah, the latter a passion of founder Carl Doumani (new owners now). I also loved a 2015 #Malbec at my tasting in July. As for the wines’ grapes: Quixote is in the #stagsleapdistrict between Stags’ Leap Winery and Shafer, so not bad in the terroir department. 2018 #NapaHarvest - The relatively mild summer followed by extended fall sunshine and moderate heat created near-ideal conditions for winemakers to let their fruit accumulate flavor complexity along with a gradual increase in sugar levels.
