In my quest for learning as much as I could about Indian sarees and the weaving and embroidery processes, I wanted to find the perfect Kantha stitch design on hand-loomed silk. It took me a long time, but I finally found it! This stitch dates back to 1AD, and traditionally uses patterns of nature - birds, flowers, fish - geometric designs or both. The shop owner I found in Kolkata, worked miracles. I wanted an all hand made saree. She found a rural lady who makes one or two sarees a year, and we talked about colors and patterns and ordered one. It took almost a year, but here it is in a picture she emailed me for final approval. My only regret is I never met the artisan. My type of treasure hunt!
