From Elli about this image:
STORY: Up to the sky
Some time ago we visited the Ariane 5 launcher in Hardheim, Germany in order to do some astro shots.
We certainly will come back next year, because it was a bit cloudy that night and I couldn't get the shots I wanted to do. Before we left there was a hole in the clouds over the rocket and I could do this shot.
Here's the description from the internet page of Hardheim about the rocket:
"At the entrance to Hardheim the model (scale 1: 4,29) of an Ariane 5 launcher perched in honor of the originating from Hardheim engineer and space pioneer Walter Hohmann.
Walter Hohmann studied engineering and worked as a town planning officer in Essen. In his free time, he worked on calculations for space travel. In 1925 he published his treatise on the "accessibility of the heavenly bodies" with which he was included in the series of space pioneers. He made calculations on the weight, size and power of a rocket to overcome the earth's gravity and to go on solar orbits to other planets. His research flowed into the Apollo program of NASA.
Since 2012, a rocket graces the town of Hardheim in honor of the pioneer. It is the model of a launcher of the Ariane family of Astrium, subsidiary of EADS. With this European rocket family and its own space program, the EU is guaranteed its own access to space."
