Rise of Red
Some people think that killing a late-term baby is immoral, but don’t believe a first or second trimester fetus has intrinsic value, and are pro choice up to a certain point, such as 20 weeks. The issue with this stance is that when a line is drawn other than conception, the line can also be applied to some adults. For example, a heartbeat can be detected at 6 weeks, while many adults require a pacemaker in order to survive. People are in comas from which they may awake, which, by the standards of most, would be considered potential sentience, and whether or not you recognize an unborn as a life, it is also still regarded as potential sentience.
So the question is, up to what point is it acceptable to end the life of a fetus? Is it 4 weeks when the child is approximately ten thousand times the size of the fertilized egg? Is it week 5 when arms, legs, and hands are taking shape? Is it week 6 when brain waves are detectable? Is it week 8 when every organ is in place, and the baby is beginning to be able to hear? How about week 9 when the baby’s teeth and fingernails are beginning to develop? Is it week 10 when the baby can breathe amniotic fluid and even urinate? What about week 11 when the baby has a skeletal system and circulation, along with all functioning organ systems? Is it week 14 when the heart is pumping several quarts of blood through the body every day? How about 20 weeks when the child can literally recognize its mother’s voice, and according to some studies, may even be able to feel pain? My point being, when you draw a line at a certain point in the pregnancy, that line can also be applied to a living human being.
