Tw mention of sexual violence
Hi there everyone,
this should be considered a general callout/warning directed @ Oakland metro: tonight at the leftover crack show there was a vendor towards the back of the venue selling patches of the self described "rape rock" band The Mentors. After (within my opinion politely) explaining that the band was decidedly problematic and that those patches shouldn't be sold within an ostensibly all inclusive and collective space, I was told to "fuck off" repeatedly alongside an insinuated threat of physical violence by a person working behind the vendor's table. I was then edged away from the booth by venue security and engaged in a prolonged dialogue centering around how I was infringing upon the vendor's first amendment constitutional rights by suggesting that they should not be selling the patches of a band openly supportive of sexual violence. After approaching the individuals working the cash box at the front afterwards, I was met with a resigned "what do you want me to do about it" stance on the matter. .
While this is likely known fact, i want to reinforce to the bay area underground music/diy community that Oakland metro does not keep a good grasp on the promoters and commercial enterprises they allow to utilize their space. Tonight they did nothing about a flagrant incursion of distasteful sexually violent imagery and I can only hope that they do better.
