A contrast set is a fancy way to say you’re doing one loaded movement, followed by another movement that directly mimics the first pattern, done EXPLOSIVELY and UNLOADED. _ The reason they’re so awesome for muscle, strength and even conditioning is scientific, but quite cool. _ During the loaded exercise, you’re fatiguing the target muscle fibres and motor units via overload. Your nervous system is also getting accustomed to your brain telling your muscles to apply additional force to make the weight move. _ Because the unloaded movement is done immediately after, this can act to “trick” your muscle fibres into firing at the same intensity as though they were loaded with heavy weights. The over-fire can cause a better training effect for explosiveness, more “good” muscle damage, and potentiate better conditioning and strength gain. _ This works best with big lifts like squats (compound set with jump squats), deadlifts (broad jumps), and bench press, seen here compound set with plyo push ups with the hands elevated (Guys under 200 can probably get away with doing the plyos down on the ground). - Remember, when the unloaded exercise slows down enough for you to notice, your set should probably end. You’ve defeated the purpose if you can no longer explode. 15 x 2 on plyo pushup and speed bench press today for @gio_pappas33 Working to become more explosive in pressing movements carries over well to building a more powerful acceleration phase when swinging and throwing. The muscles in the chest and anterior shoulder play a huge role as prime movers. Utilizing Post Activation Potentiation is a great way to ensure that the CNS is “turned on”, and that muscles are prepped to contract as rapidly as possible. Training the muscles to contract faster trains for improved motor unit firing rate and helps increase fast-twitch fiber conversion rate. What’s interesting is that PAP has been linked to have far greater improvements in stronger/highly trained individuals. So what does this mean?? It means we should be strong and good at the movements first. Get the most out of the movement and switch to other “more advanced” techniques when you notice a plateau of positive adaptations from training. Also, it means that voluntary muscle activation (ability to recruit high-threshold motor units) may greatly affect how powerful a muscle can ultimately become. Even moreso than I originally thought... If we are to get the most out of our athletic ability, we must have the capability to turn on high threshold motor units and do so VERY quickly. This is my take on why explosive training is so beneficial for trainees who already are “big and strong”...anyone else have a take? You could also attach a band to the bench to assist the speed on the way up if you struggle to safely get back to the starting position. Everyone knows (or at least they should know) the benefits of moving heavy weight, but it’s not talked about enough how moving lighter weight very fast correlates very well to throwing and swinging velocities. This, of course, should take place after you can handle very very heavy weights. If you’ve followed my page over the last 6-7 months you may have seen the big improvements the athletes who use these methods have seen. Gio displayed great strength in the heavy bench press (around 230 pounds when he came in), but did not display great high-speed strength (taking 135 lbs for around 1.0 m/s peak velocity). Fast forward 7 months. Though his 1 Rep Max has improved in all the major lifts, he has seen much bigger increases in speed working at lighter weights (taking weights he used to move at 1.0 m/s and now moving them in the 1.5 m/s range).
