HAPPY LABOR DAY!
It’s Labor Day here in the US, a public holiday, to quote Wikipedia: “Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday in September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country”
Generally speaking, we do much less in the way of ‘labor’ as we used to, although I think most people in the US still work way too hard. There is a perception outside of the US (wrongly) that Americans are lazy. Some are, for sure, just like there are lazy bastards in every country, but in general I have found that workers in this country work bloody hard, take very little time off and are proud of their jobs.
From a personal perspective, I’ve been working since I was 12 years old. My first 4 years in the labor market I delivered papers and cut lawns. At 16 I left school and got my first full time job, and have been employed, or self employed ever since. I’ve never been ‘unemployed’. When we moved to America I had planned on taking several months off to just relax, instead I accepted a job offer 2 weeks after we landed!! It’s been 10 years now that I’ve been self employed and anyone that works for themselves knows how hard and stressful that is. To relieve that pressure a little, I recently accepted an offer from a friend to return to the full time workforce as a Studio Manager/Lead Retoucher for a commercial studio. Portland Pin-Ups will continue unaffected. I have spent much of the last 10 years working on freelance commercial retouching anyway, so this new position will allow me to devote much more time to each client and their artworks.
Sometimes I really wish there was a “Self Employed Day”! Happy Labor Day everyone, for those that are taking the day off, relax and enjoy. Here are two artworks of our lovely Bombshell, Nicky, working hard to enjoy!
