This multi-strand bracelet represents the recovery of my creativity & Imagination. This was the first piece of detailed jewelry I designed after I recovered from tapering off Fentanyl & 6 other pain related medications. I was prescribed the medications for CRPS (a painful neurological condition). I understand that many countries outside the USA restrict the usage of these drugs for only hospice use. In 2015 I was alarmed by the number of deaths attributed to these opioids & chose to taper off the medications. Currently prescribing protocols are changing & there is more focus on cognitive behavioral therapies to reduce pain. I am fortunate that I always maintained an active practice of cognitive strategies- progressive relaxation, self-hypnosis, imagery, EMDR, etc. My jewelry reflects my belief of attending to the physical, social, mental, & spiritual dimensions of living in order to obtain our optimal quality of life. The bracelet has a ❤️charm as a reminder of my belief. This is my #visionscape for #progressiverelaxation #meditation. . . If you have difficulty generating a scene in your mind's eye I suggest you source a photo of a place where you enjoy being. Look at the photo and notice what aspects are pleasing and peaceful. When you have formed a bit of an image spend time in your mindscape. Breathe. Enjoy yourself in this peaceful setting. Explore it as you wish. Everything you encounter here will be gentle and safe. The path is gently descending, the lake is the perfect temperature. The animals are calm and unafraid. Whatever your mindscape holds it is safe. The elements are all teachers. You may choose to interact with a teacher. You may spend as little or as much time as you like exploring. Your mindscape is a refuge. Go there, and may you find yourself refreshed. . . Or, #holodeck in your head. . . And a caution about #statedependentlearning for those who partake. If you learn something in an altered mental state (such as drunk, stoned, loaded, tired, and so on) the memory can sometimes be hard to access in a neutral non-altered state. For example, you can start by #flexing your feet and feeling the tension in your shin. Then, completely relax your feet. Next, point your toes and feel the tension in your calves. Again, completely relax your feet. Go all of the way up your body until you raise your eyebrows and then #relax them, and then pull your eyebrows down into a frown, and then relax them. Pre-match mental skills training is important in order to have a good performance. In a sport like BJJ with a bracketed tournament, post-match mental skills training is very important as well. I make use of body-to-mind techniques, which not only help to refocus my mind for the next match, but also to bring my body out of the adrenaline-pumping anaerobic-dominant state. Body and mind recover together, and performance is enhanced. My last outing (at the CBJJF VIO against two black belts) was my worst pre-match mental prep since my first CBJJF tournament in 2012. Fortunately my post-match and following pre-match mental prep was much better, even if my results weren't. Occasionally I run my Saturday adult fundamentals class through a round of progressive relaxation. I have found this to be an effective tool for body awareness, like the status of that last nagging injury, and for letting the conscious mind move past pointless anxiety that competition can create. I love the term 'SOMATIC QUIETING' to describe activities that decrease sensitivity of the ANS (Autonomic Nervous System), and calm the nervous system down, thereby activating the parasympathetic part of the nervous system so the body can rest, repair and digest. . These types of activities can lead to SOMATIC QUIETING: . ☆diaphragmatic/belly breathing ☆slowing down the breath ☆meditation ☆movement that is done in comfort, without strain, slowly, mindfully and with awareness of sensation ☆progressive relaxation ☆guided imagery ☆massage . ________________________________________________ AN EXPLANATION OF THE AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM . The ANS regulates functions in the body that occur automatically, such as: ●breathing ●blood pressure ●digestion ●heart beat ●bladder function ●narrowing/widening of the blood vessels. . It is composed of two branches: 1) parasympathetic nervous system 2) sympathetic nervous 1 The Sympathetic Nervous System -------------------------------------------------------- Also known as our stress response system, or the fight or flight system. It makes us more alert and aware and provides a boost in energy so that we are capable of dealing with the stressful situation effectively. It increases energy and is often referred to as the ACCELERATOR of the autonomic nervous system. When it is set in motion: ●heart rate increases ●blood pressure increases ●pupils dilate ●circulation is restricted ●digestion slows ●bladder relaxes ●muscle tension increases . 2 The Parasympathetic Nervous System --------------------------------------------------------------- The job of the parasympathetic nervous system is the exact opposite of fight/flight. Just because I don't post doesn't mean I don't practice. Yoga for me is everything... much more than physical exercise - it's a way I try to live. Yoga/union (body, mind, breath) for me is simply trying to listen to myself and to do what I feel is right. * I try to be empathetic and nonjudgmental.. I try to not engage in gossip and I try to avoid people that do. I try to easily forgive and understand. I try to smile and make eye contact; I try to create the connections I crave. I try to not spend time in places that make me feel uncomfortable. I try to not waste time online, I purposely leave my phone behind and I rarely watch tv. I try to eat foods that make my body feel good. Yes I looove and enjoy pasta, pizza and sweets but the more I take care of myself the more I feel like crap after I indulge. I don't feel guilt about the food itself but typically afterwards I feel nauseous and lethargic. * Day 28 and 29... yesterday I worked and then taught a lovely class, and today I worked and bummed around. I didn't make it onto my mat but I did very gentle twists and stretches in bed. I'm currently diffusing Lavender and Cedarwood with Peace and Calming massaged into my scalp. Pardon me while intentionally work on my Sanskrit 😅#fancy If you had to re -do this 50 times because your brain goes to another planet when upside down, welcome to the club! I surprised myself with getting some float away from the wall. It was very interesting to have the legs off kilter but to still feel balanced in the foundation. There's a life lesson🙄 But, honestly, my favorite yoga moment of the day was actually at the radiology office. I knew what to expect with my MRI (close quarters, loud noise) but stuff like that doesn't phase my anxiety. Except right now, apparently, because I'm just overwhelmed with the move. 🤦‍♀️They gave me headphones with spa music, but I was quickly getting un.com.for.ta.ble! I needed to get shit together, because I was NOT in the mood to be drenched in tears when they rolled me out of there (which, by the way, totally reminded me of a cadaver being rolled out of a cooler🤔🤷‍♀️) Just focusing on my breath wasn't cutting it. Suddenly I remembered my #progressiverelaxation skillz and it worked like a freaking charm! After a few minutes I was actually enjoying being in there. I just love a #yogainreallife application 🤓 There must be other people who have freaked out in there. No? Just me?😂But seriously, I would love to be on call to help other people in that situation. Chilling in the backyard with the dog after work yesterday. This is where I find my inner peace and can reflect on my emotional state. Being honest with yourself about your emotional health is, I'm finding, quite necessary. I can no longer ignore the negative feelings that bubble up, nor should I. How is your meditation practice going? It's always a good time to start! There are so many benefits to meditation, it's great for: Stress reduction Restful sleep Weight management Greater clarity and focus Lowered blood pressure and hypertension Slower heart rate Decreased cholesterol levels Improved immune function Sometimes when my mind is busy with thoughts and it feels overwhelming to sit quietly, I will put on a guided meditation recording to help me relax. There were tight places even autogenic relaxation couldn't get to. Then I discovered Somatics. 💖 The stimulation of the motor cortex (movement) and sensory cortex (sensation) in somatic movements highlights areas of SMA 'sensory motor amnesia' to the brain. (SMA = areas the brain is not able to fully sense and control in movement). Via somatic movement the brain begins to control these areas, and resting muscle length is reset in the 'pandiculation' technique we use. Our body then comes more under the voluntary control of the brain.
