Today’s skill of the day is brought to you by the V in IMPROVE. When you are feeling overly frustrated, overwhelmed, unsettled or distressed there are a variety of skills you can use to help bring your intense feelings to a more manageable level even when you may not be able to immediately change the circumstances behind your feelings.
The DBT skill I like to practice when I am having strong feelings about a problem I can’t make better in the current moment or near future is called ‘Vacation’. It doesn’t require money in the bank, packing your suitcase for a sunny destination or using substances to escape intense feelings. Taking a vacation could be taking a walk to your favourite park, making yourself a sweet cup of tea, taking a warm bath, etc.
For me, I like to spend time with one of my favourite neighbourhood dogs. Today I started to panic about a particular piece of my life that is very unknown and that I have very little ability to immediately have things nailed down on. I was able to stop myself at several points in the day and go pet this wonderful creature. This is my vacation from the intense feelings I have about my situation, which helps me to tolerate what I am facing. I also like listening to a couple of my favourite songs while sitting in the sunshine. So if you find yourself feeling distressed or in a crisis that is tough to deal with try finding yourself an easily accessible vacation. It may be just what you need to improve the moment and help you cope with what you can’t control. Смотреть полностью
