💥SCIATIC MOBILIZATION💥 . Mobilization of the nervous system or neural flossing can often be a helpful strategy for reducing nerve pain. In this video, I am demonstrating two techniques (tensioner and slider) for the sciatic nerve in a position commonly used to assess sciatic nerve health known as the straight leg raise position. By moving the ankle and neck in a specific pattern, neural sliding is thought to help the nerve and it’s branches slide against adjacent tissues (muscle, bone, fascia, etc), increase blood flow and reduce symptoms. . Let's do it! 🤸‍♀️ 1) Start by catching some air time and getting comfortable with your kicks. Practice a few kicks with both legs. For now your objective is getting used to some air time, so forget going all the way up for now, practice your kicks and practice coming down lightly 💪 2) Now you may be ready for some more air time. As you kick, bend the straight leg and bring it in towards the other leg, up in the air. Maybe finding a moment of balance 💪 3) Ready for straight legs pincha? Bring legs together, actively move them one towards the other and reach up with the feet, while maintaining a strong push into the ground. Draw ribs in and remember to breathe! . IT DOESN’T STOP: The word that we are gathering around, the subject we study. On the ultimate scale: it is the constant condition. This is my perspective. . I’ve said it many times before - if it’s just about physical practice, I’m out. It’s not enough. I want to be able to study this subject even if I have no arms or legs. That physical practice that has been my entry point & filter is a matter of chance. It could have been drawing, writing, music, cooking. These gave way as my physical practice increased. . To learn about movement through our primary sensory organ is so immediate and accessible to most, however, that it’s no surprise that so many of us are invested. Given the current zeitgeist in physical practice and communication it’s also understandable; things are different if fields need to be ploughed and battles fought. . It has been said that if “you’re not moving, you’re dead’. This depends on your perspectives of “you”. On the molecular level the movement doesn’t stop. On the cosmic level, it doesn’t stop. It doesn’t stop. There are only changes in quality, and “change of quality is a matter of movement” - Maxine Sheets-Johnston. From this view, “stillness” too is incorporated. . My movement practice is firstly an acceptance that I cannot control anything - only facilitate, direct, and ride. If you stop, it continues to change. If you move, it continues to change. . Many traditions have directly or indirectly alluded to movement on this ultimate scale. To bastardly paraphrase one of my favourite from the west: “You cannot step into the same river twice - it’s not the same river and you’re not the same person” - Heraclitus. . Do you have shoulder pain? . This is called "Draw Your Sword" and combines shoulder flexion, abduction and external rotation to help you get better faster! . Here's how: . 1. Use a light to medium resistance band. 2. Step on the band with the opposite foot of the side with the shoulder pain. 3. Reach your hand across your waist, as if you were grabbing a sword from its holster. 4. Draw the sword out by abducting your arm and rotating it up so that the "sword" or your thumb is now facing up and back. (If your thumb is still facing down, you are doing it wrong) 5. Scapular retraction occurs during this exercise causing the shoulder blades to pull in toward each other. • One of the reasons I love the reverse fly is because many people, especially beginners struggle with exercises such as the bench press, where you are required to keep your shoulders pinned back & stay locked out through out your entire body. • The reverse fly can help you develop a strong mind muscle connection with your traps, rhomboids and posterior deltoids. By doing this it will become much easier to pin your shoulders back during a bench press and thus reduce your chances of injury. • The face pull is another brilliant exercise for the same reasons as the reverse fly. To say that my relationship status with Pincha [aka Pinchamayurasana or forearm stand] has been complicated, would be an understatement! Two years back I saw her on someone’s Instagram feed and it was love at first sight! Must I admit, she was not an easy one to woo! I flirted with her, using blocks, yoga-wheel, wall, name it- but she would barely entertain me for a few nano seconds before having me tumble in heaps to the ground. I showed her my obsession by practicing 6 days a week, for over a 100 weeks and she wouldn’t so much as give me the confidence to practice away from the wall. I fought and fumed in frustration, as I carried on practicing, despite injured shoulders, bruised elbows, swollen back. Little did I know then that moving from headstands to forearm stands is a different ball game alltogether! She tested my patience, stripped me of every ounce of hope, motivation, zeal that I had, till I almost gave up in dejection. 2 years on, I think my tenacity did finally win her over, or perhaps she just decided to show some pity on me, letting me embrace her in her full form. TGIF, Brené Brown style 🎉 TRUST- I haven’t exactly been spending enough time practicing my side planks lately, so taking it to the moving platform of the Reformer (on my weak shoulder side, too) took a lot of trust that there was some muscle memory in there. Somewhere. GRATEFUL- It’s my daughter’s birthday this weekend, and I’m feeling increasingly, incredibly grateful for every minute we get to spend with her before she heads off to do all the adulting. There are a few more years, but, WOW, have they gone fast so far. Part 3 of Controlling Your Environment (see previous posts.) Sleep is super important (10 hours minimum) and often neglected in our modern fast paced environment. The typical mindset is get 4-6 hours of sleep and do more work. I can tell you that you will be reliant upon coffee, get depression and in turn raise your cortisol levels so your fat will increase and your body will go into catabolic mode. In the long run, 4-6 hours of sleep will put you behind, unable to let you focus on your work and you will go in a deadly cycle of napping and your timings off balance. Yes, you may temporarily do more and increase your income temporarily doing more things. But you will go into crash mode, sleep all the day and stay inside your house depressed unable to do anything and even sometimes skip on workouts. There are no excuses not to eat heathy, get 10 hours of sleep and get your gym routine 5 days a week and 7 days a week of cardio. In order to control your diet and training, you must control your sleep. For me, I sleep until 1 Pm in the afternoon. Rest and recovery and a burst of intense training and healthy foods ($500/ mo of food if you’re maintaining 160 lbs of weight) is a must. ◾️Lower Trap Strengthening ◾️ 📚 The trapezius is is a very large muscle on our back that originates at our skull, runs down the spine and inserts onto the clavicle, acromion, and scapular spine of the shoulder blade. It is divided into 3️⃣ main parts based on fiber direction: upper, middle, and lower traps. All of which are important in their own way to help with stability and mobility of our shoulder. ****** 📕 The lower traps can be widely forgotten in strengthening protocols, as the upper and middle are more favored in training for scapular elevation and retraction respectively. However, in order to incorporate the use of the lower traps into back exercises, it starts with the basic actions of the lower traps: 1️⃣ Scapular Upward Rotation 2️⃣ Scapular Depression 3️⃣ Scapular Retraction 4️⃣ Scapular Anterior Tilting Prevention ****** 📗 Of course lower trap isolation is hard to accomplish, as other muscles such as the rhomboids, middle trap, erectors, and serratus can all play a role in synergistic activation when working the posterior chain. But by positioning the arms in a “Y” formation above your head, this incorporates the lower traps more during retraction in order to prevent anterior tipping and depress the scapula back down. For our last day of #InvertedWork2 I’m choosing crow pose and headstand. Both of these are favorites because they are super fun and I feel somewhat confident in my ability. I did however underestimate the level of difficulty when practicing them all together!!! Pushing back up into crow from a headstand was a flipping beast!!! I collapsed so many times trying get the right mix of strength, balance and stability. I attribute my progress to the consistent daily practice over the past week during the challenge and a strong desire for success. Here’s a great quick fix to your lateral raises to put more tension on the medial deltoid and less on your forearms.👌🏼 . Slightly bend your elbows to 90 degrees and pull up to shoulder level and lift dumbbell with elbows and less with hands. . Hook grip your dumbbell to remove tension from forearms. . You can also use straps to wrap around the dumbbell for less tension on your forearms and increase the load of your dumbbell!👌🏼💪🏼 . You should feel you are moving into an Overhead Press Position. 3️⃣ Maintain good contact to the ground through your right palm while reaching with your left hand to your left foot. Slowly return to the starting position and perform the exercise with the other side! ✅ I usually start this exercise with 3 sets of 30 seconds alternating sides with each rep! Then build it up to 3 sets of 60 seconds. 💯 This will be one of your best Warm-up and Strengthening Exercises for your Boxing Sessions or your Overhead Lifts! ➖ 💡 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧’𝐬 𝐒𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐞: I especially love this exercise for both my Boxers & Muay Thai fighters but also for my Overhead Lifters. Shoulder presses Single arm DB lats Military front bar press Hammer grip front raises BB uprights Bar shoulder shrugs Standing cable single arm front raises . 15 reps first set, increase weights and do 10 reps second set, increase max weight and 5 reps twice at the third set.
