m o v i n g f o r w a r d . Hitting me a little slow, but I'm just realizing how much I'm gonna miss it. . This space means so much to me even though I've only been here since June 2017. The experiences, classes I've taken and taught, all the moments of learning about the studio business, and how to maintain a sanctuary like ANYA amidst the city chaos in Chelsea/Flatiron. Meeting beautiful yogis, dancers, and mentors (lookin at you @courtneybaueryoga 💕) . I will be forever grateful for how I was welcomed from Day 1 at ANYA with open arms and hearts. Although this is our last full week open at W 24th and 6th, I know our next space will be even more beautiful. Can't wait for the big reveal! . Part one last month was great! This month in part two I will review upper body postures. This month will be utkatasa and the warrior postures. Squat patterns can be very awkward for people. There are ideal reference lines to look for and to be able to get someone in for proper load transfer. # Too many students and instructors get stuck on legs together, arms overhead, looking up and adjusting from the least ideal joint. This alters muscle recruitment, increases load is the smallest joints instead of the biggest. # The beginner workshop series I put together goes over fundamental poses, breath technique, mindset, emotions and the chakras associated with each posture # The dates for Part 2 and 3 are February 24, and March 17. Time is from 130 to 4:30 PM. If you can’t make all three or missed the first one, I will review the previous weekend in so you can feel all caught up and not behind # It’s almost like a miniature teacher training for the every day yoga without having to spend thousands of dollars being gone for weeks at a time. Especially, if you don’t want to teach yoga but simply learn more about the past years and yourself in a safe environment.Working link in Bio

‘My Yoga might not look like Your Yoga Each unique individual has unique and individual needs” # Great post from one of my friend on FB. One of the comments was their yoga is squats, deadlifts and bench press. # Yoga doesn’t have to be the body weight postures we have been accustomed to believing is the only way to do yoga. Yoga are a series of Calisthenics created by the yogis who sat in meditation and discovered their bodies needed more more movement. # Skilled weight lifters, Power lifters and Olympic lifters are the best at focus and being present during their workouts. If not, they would seriously hurt themselves. # Not everybody wants to move in your typical yoga postures for finding insight and peace. Recovery is getting away from the heights that make us feel as though we ran 5 marathons. Recovery and rejuvenation can take many forms ...just like healing takes on many forms # “How much are you willing to compromise the integrity of the structure to achieve the astetic of the pose?”. Last post on alignment was someone having retroversion of the hip and how it will look in a squat or an Utkatasana. Today’s post will be someone presenting with a anteverson of the hip. # From the outside looking this client/student will have knock knees and be pigeon toed. Their utkatasa will look normal as they have plenty of external rotation for this pose BUT will not have it for a wide stance squat or a goddess squat or a horse stance squat. Btw, they are are the same squat but different names. # What you will see in these squats is that the migrates inward or medially; the arch of the foot falls to the ground and outer edge of the foot comes off the floor. This happens with a ‘normal’ set up. If anyone went to wide it would present like that. # The correction is to walk the feet inward coming out of such a wide position. The knee does not have to line up on the shoulders in the pane of glass setup. It just simply doesn’t work for them. The feet may have to rotate in as well. # Another posture that is incredibly difficult for this person is simply sitting crossed legged and prone pigeon. They just don’t have that kind of external rotation. # When we are able to to help someone distinguish between a functional restriction (one that is either done by cuing or consistent practice of stretch and strengthening) vs a structural restriction (which is bone to bone; how they were born) there can come the practice of acceptance. # For some people this is a relief to know they have a structural restriction and for some is disappointing. The practice of acceptance and loving of oneself is our own unique journey # My beginners yoga workshop is Sat Feb 24th from 1:30-4:30. For more info I have a working link in my bio. Today’s post is about alignment for Utkatasana. Also, this is the topic for part 2 of the beginners yoga workshop on Feb 24th. # As you can see in the first picture Taylor’s knees have migrated inward, or have they? Inward migration would indicate cueing would simply solve the misalignment. This is not the case for @taylortrimarco # Many instructors get stuck on the foot when aligning the knees in standing postures. The majority of the people coming to class this works just fine. But what about the clients coming in sub as Taylor? # Taylor’s knees alignment is reflective of her hip structure. Taylor has what is called Retroversion of the hip. I’m not going to get technical in this post. People who have retroversion of the hip will like to have their feet turned out. # Why their knees move inward as they bring their feet around to point straight ahead is because they have little internal rotation of the hip. # Because Taylor is a woman I very rarely teach utkatasa with the feet together. A woman’s pelvis is in general wider than a man’s and feet together is not ideal for most woman. In reality we don’t do very much with our feet glued together like that except holding poop or pee in. Lol # You will see in the next picture I have her rotate her feet back out and her whole body lines up and she becomes happy. She is also to find more depth. # You can watch the video I did and I am talking about this as well. It’s not that I will ignore the foot alignment b/c it’s important. In this case it is not what is driving the misalignment. # In my workshop I’ll be going over hip anomalies, ankle restrictions, and thoracic restrictions and how they affection your standing postures and how to adjust. # Just because something is right for one person for the pose doesn’t mean it work for another. As an instructor it’s your responsibility to learn the differences so you can help the client find what’s right for them. Working link in bio for workshop

Who do you look up to? One of my favorite pictures of the boys. This picture speaks volumes to me! # PD has taught Louie gentleness, Patience, Love. PD is such a calm, gentle old soul. Patience is definitely some PD has loads of b/c when Louie was a puppy he was relentless with pouncing on him, biting his face and in general being an obnoxious puppy. # PD let him be, disciplined as needed (which was hardly ever) and when Louie was worn out Louie would sleep on PD. # This little boy loves his big brother. As always dogs teach us (if we are paying attention) beautiful qualities. So practice more love, patience and gentleness today! # Who is it that you look up to? Promised myself to journal everyday to begin the #journey of #vulnerability which has to start with myself. You learn a lot about yourself going on a road trip with another. I could have posted a non #dog picture but Louie is going to help as I begin this journey to take me to new levels of #vibration. # Plus, my dogs are a significant part of this journey. Yoga has made me so grateful for my strength both physical and mental. As someone who is so used to high intensity weight training and cardio, I used to think yoga was going to be too slow for me or not enough of a workout. How wrong could I be!? Inversions and arm balances are such an amazing way to test your physical strength, they teach you patience, practise and to BREATH but most of all they get your heart racing, body warm and are definitely a full body workout. 💪🏼 . #yoga #figureeightpose #inversions #armbalances #strengthyoga #yogi #yogaofinstagram

I saw this amazing flow by @carrot_bowl_bonnie . It looked challenging and beautiful and graceful all at once. Of course she makes every move look effortless 😍. I thought for, ‘no way... never’. And then I though, ‘why not?’. So I got up and practiced. I did NOT get it on the first try. Or the second. My attempts are in IG stories 😂. But after each oopsie, I got back up and tried again. You can even see it here... I didn’t get it right. But I tried again. I got it right (although always room for improvement). That smile at the end... that feeling is WORTH the falls. #Pumped. What ever you’re trying today, keep trying. Laugh with yourself. Keep getting back up. Providing new modifications for students. Changing the voice and cues just a tad to help a student conceptualize the shape or asana better. . I'm always both humbled and challenged by what I learn as a yoga instructor in my classes. It's a constant work of two-sided growth. . Self-Reflect. Be Aware. Be Mindful. We hear it all the time. It is good for us, they say. This week, these practices were key. They were key to my health. The ability to be self-aware of the need to to really take care of myself this week. Being aware of stress rising, being aware of how I know I will feel if I chose to ignore my emotions, being aware that I need to remind myself that it is okay if things don’t get done, and being aware of my tendency to try and control rather than to let go, being aware of my needs and what works for my body and mind...this was what guided me in the right direction for my wellbeing. This week, I needed to put all else aside to take care of my mental health, to get outside, to cuddle up with family, and to see all the wonderful parts of life, even in the toughest times. Self-care was no big to-do... it was simply noticing all of the little things that would turn in to big things for me this week. This week has been filled with so firsts and so many scary things! Today I went to my first yoga class at the yoga coop ! I regularly made fun of the idea of going to yoga, I thought it was something hippies did. As someone who is #1 the most anxious human being ever/ struggling with social situations and racing thoughts , #2 extremely over weight I struggling specifically with hip pain this was honestly one of the coolest days I have ever had. The best money I have ever spent. My heart and my head feels light. My hips feel like I lost pressure that has been there for years. Part 1 starts this Sat Jan 27th. Do you still question what proper breath Technique is? Or what can meditation look like? Do you still question whether you are doing your postures right, even after attending yoga classes for years? # I have put together a beginner workshop series to go over fundamental poses, breath technique, mindset, emotions and the chakras associated with each posture # The dates are Saturdays January 27, February 24, and March 17. Time is from 130 to 4:30 PM. If you can’t make all three that’s ok! I will review the previous weekend in so you can feel all caught up and not behind # It’s almost like a miniature teacher training for the every day yoga without having to spend thousands of dollars being gone for weeks at a time. Down Dog is one of the most challenging postures to help someone with to really find their place. There are ideal reference lines to look for and to be able to get someone in for proper load transfer. I will filming and will be available for sale if not able to attend # Too many students and instructors get stuck on straight legs, flat hands and hands too close together and adjusting from the least ideal joint. Trying to get little Miss Olympia started early. I did some handstands and a few headstands today. They felt pretty strong, I guess in some ways once you learn them they're like riding a bike 🤸🏼‍♀️🚴‍♀️ I need to force myself to scale back a little though. This diastasis recti is super annoying and not healed yet. I need to complete my PT before I get back to doing strength and flowing yoga. It's frustrating to finally not be pregnant anymore and I've been craving getting my full practice back for months.... and I still need to wait possibly a few more months to heal totally 😣 I need to take this time to focus on my flexibility and do gentle stretching yoga. For me that's the yoga I find boring though 😕 I'm obsessively infatuated with the challenge of things that require strength and agility. I have a hard time mentally just slowly relaxing into a posture to increase flexibility. To me that feels like watching paint dry. That's my yoga though... mentally, THAT is my yoga. The stuff I find boring and don't have the patience for. Okay yall!😅💦 first time attempting this move since before i got pregnant with Rosalyn. (Sooo over 2 years) I’m a little rusty and couldn’t figure outa comfortable spot on the ball at first, but I WAS STILL ABLE TO DO IT. There was a little hesitation and I wasn’t even sure my muscles remembered how. Retraining myself to do some of these things makes me nervous, hesitant, and sometimes even makes me want to feed on self doubt. #thestruggleisreal One day at a time I am getting closer and closer to my goals. #patienceiseverything and #consistencyisthekey_ . Side note, this is GREAT for all over core action! It takes a lot of strength to do this move. I worked for 6 months ,when I was taught how to do this, before I was able to pull myself up.
