Listening to @lewishowes in the morning now has become my morning #ritual. It helps set my tone for the rest of the day! One of my favorite people to follow is @brendonburchard and I can't wait to get his new book #highperformancehabits. I listen to his podcasts as well and done #expertsacademy a few years back. I have made so many massive improvements within myself, #mindset and #performance. I still have a a long way to go. This episode is exceptional. I've listened to @brenebrown before on vulnerability and shame and she certainly gets to the heart of the matter and touches people deeply. This particular episode I heard @lewishowes talk about his sexual abuse as child. Immediate connection made! My experience was my older brother sexually abusing me as a small girl (age 3-6) I learned early on that I needed to protect myself physically and emotionally. This is how I found lifting weights. I also taught aerobics as well. Then a date rape at 18 and I told no one. The protection emotionally and physically grew. I found power yoga at 26 years of age where I was working and I loved the release in tension physically in my body. I had no idea of the emotional tension it was getting ready to release. More and more memories were coming up for me and didn't know what to do with them b/c lifting, aerobics and running didn't always help. The Magic of yoga is that some form of it always helps. Through the help of some gifted people I came across in my life I was able to transform these shameful feelings into confidence and love. This is why I created Strength Yoga. To help people maintain healthy boundaries and to be ok with saying No. so thank the you Lewis for opening up b/c even though I have had my yoga and personal training biz for 10 years now and created Strength Yoga shortly after I very rarely open up about it. But it is the Why and how I became a strong, confident and capable woman

Glute max and all the extensor become inhibited when you place all your weight on the further stuff most back end. of your heel. While this is correct placement many Yogis place their weight so far back in the heel it places the knee in a hyperextended position. This also displaces the talus (a very important bone in the ankle) to a posterior position which then neurologically inhibits the extensors on the leg. Considering you need Glute max and the extensors for this pose the brain/body have to create a new path and recruit muscles that are not ideal for this pose. Which will cause ankle, knee, low back and neck pain and makes your balance worse.

How much rest you give yourself? Or better question is how much rest time do you actually allow yourself? And I emphasize the word allow. Because I am very guilty of this because I was born with such a strong constitution that I don't even notice or can't be bothered by the signals for rest. Then I'm so exhausted or on the verge of getting sick before I take down time. I delude myself that by teaching a Gentle class that Im taking it easy. The issue is I'm still working. I'm still learning this skill of time setting time aside for myself more than I do. The beautiful part is I'm busy helping people eat better, feel better and move better. The more I work the more time I need to set aside for myself before I end up with an illness that will knock me out. It's better to take time off doing things you like that relaxing vs being sick and exhausted and no choice but to lie around. Type truth if you agree

It's always fun getting a brand new client for #pdtr. This man is a golfer. He has a common complaint of lateral elbow pain in right elbow. Other issues are left shoulder pain around the bicep tendon. Thoracic rotation restriction which was causing hypertonicity of the rhomboids from a fall where he landed on his back. Also, right hip pain from a weight lifting program that was not put together well for a golfer. Plus, a hypertonic right hip flexor that was related to hitting his head. I just love what the body presents to you! Some of you might think some of these issues are all separate. So did I at first! Layers... Other modalities were not working and he had been coming to my #yoga classes where I bring in a lot of functional anatomy and talk about pdtr. Can't wait to hear how his #golf game is!

The physical reason to be strong in a push pattern is obvious. A strong upper body can help push ourselves off the floor after doing yoga, strength session, pushing ourselves out of a chair. A lot of women do not have a lot of upper body strength. This is not stereotyping---it's a fact and my 20+years in the fitness industry. There are many reasons why this is true for some women. As girls growing up we may have been shifted towards more "dainty" chores. When I was growing up I had "girl" chores. Cooked dinner, cleaned the dishes, the house and laundry. My brothers had outdoor and "boy" oriented chores. My dad wasn't sexist it's just how it was and anybody who knows me knows I'm strong and capable! But what I have noticed is how much we are taught to take on from others. As women there are a lot of us who have a big nurturing side to us. This is great, magical and loving. We can also find ourselves taking on too much. We take on and we take on more and more after that. We now find ourselves not being able to PUSH requests away and create healthy boundaries. Our shoulders become round forward, we develop a forward head posture and round our upper backs to protect our heart. We focused on this in class today during the push phase. The focus was to push away things that are no longer healthy for us and no longer serve us as we moved into the up phase of the push up. In arm balances it was about maintaining your boundaries. It was amazing how much the strength increased in these amazing women! There's more to heart opening than stretching your chest and shoulders. Many women's heart are open. In fact they are very open and loving. It's just as loving and heart opening to be able to maintain your boundaries and say No. When you are able to say No ...your yes will have value!

I just tried this last night and it was delicious and pretty easy to make. I found this recipe again on #Yummly and it's from Budget Bytes and it's called Date and Gorgonzola Stuffed Sweet Potatoes •4 sweet potatoes •1 Tbs of Olive Oil (but I didn't use b/c I browned up some hamburger and mixed it in for the protein) • 6 whole medjool dates (I only used three because that was way too many carbohydrates in addition to this sweet potato) • 1/3 cup of walnuts chopped (I used 1/4 cup of chopped Pecans because I don't like walnuts) • 1/4 cup of Gorgonzola, crumbled • 1 handful chopped parsley Mixed it all together; slice open the baked sweet potato and stuff it! 😉 What took the longest was clearly baking the sweet potatoes but now I have four individual meals for the next couple of days

This is a quick and easy salad and very tasty. I have an app call #yummly that I love! It's so easy to change any recipe to suit your needs or what's available in the fridge! 6 ounces romaine lettuce One head of broccoli One avocado 1/3 cup of pistachios Feta cheese crumbles Vinaigrette I didn't have an avocado so I chopped up some cilantro that needed to be used up. I'm using way less pistachios than what is listed. Probably closer to 1/4, b/c I'm adding meat to my meal. My vinaigrette is simply lemon juice and some olive oil. You chopped the broccoli and then flash boil it for about one minute. Add any protein to this meal to make it complete.

Thoracic mobility I see many individuals with limited thoracic movement, whether they are simply stuck in flexion or through lack of mobility and flexibility training. With all my clients i train and assess i maintain spinal health or get them moving again through movement therapy and other training methods. One thing that i see missing from most peoples training is rotation. Simply adding rotation exercises will help thoracic and also keep the facet joints from becoming locked. In this picture im opening my thoracic but also chest and shoulders. Holding a 2.5kg plate in each hand and with gravity im eccentrically elongating my chest, as well as my core. Deep breathing will allow you to relax into this move rather than holding stiff, over time you will feel your body open up. Yoga wheel by @yogi.bare

So this is a little tricky here for the sacroiliac ligament because there is a lot more options. But when you're working in a class your best option to start off with is actually a pigeon oriented stretch with rotation or a twist. In general what is happening is that the sacroiliac ligament is being overworked and that way it so I'm a bit painful and that it's the Inguinal ligaments am on the front side of the body that runs from that the hip onto the pubic bone and the pubic synthesis that could be the ones that are under working. Sometimes the student will complain of anterior hip pain and will always want to stretch the adductors or the hip flexors group. If it is flips and it's the inguinal ligament that is the one that's being overworked over the sacro-iliac ligament they will have adductor pain or discomfort while moving into the supine single leg lumbar twist or being in a position where there is deep hip flexion. You would still do a Glute bridge to strengthen and Glute Max because in this case piriformis is overriding Gluth Max well Glute Max is still coming on it happens to be the wrong order. Keep in mind Glute Max and piriformis work together to stabilize the sacro-iliac joint with force closure. You would also have to you strengthen hip flexor movement with lower abdominals because they work together to help stabilize the hip joint. These anterior muscles and hip flexors will be inhibited or not getting enough neural input to come in with the intensity that is required and the body will create a new strategy. We can choose to be happy or not. This little guy is almost 12 and has severe arthritis is both elbows and lumbo-sacral disease. He just climbed 13 stairs by himself so he can sleep with me on his bed. That is not an easy feet for him as he gets out of breath and one of his elbows doesn't really bend anymore. I would be happy too if I could still do that by myself at his age. PD is an inspiration

Is it really your glutes when you engage them that makes your back hurt? Or it is ligaments over working for the glutes? Glute max helps stabilize the low back so unlikely that engaging the glutes takes the stress into the low back. Do you know what force closure is? If not let me know. This video I talk about up dog and cobra. When I go to classes I will hear consistently to keep the glutes relaxed in order to keep it out of the lower back. This is a misunderstanding of the biomechanics of the lumbar pelvic region and the posterior chain. You want the glutes engaged in order to keep it out of your back. Those two lovely hunks of meat on the backside of your body are designed to protect your lower back when engaged. They are global stabilizers so they assist in helping stabilize the shoulder, the low back, the hip, the knee and the ankle. Is there a reason why I would tell somebody to keep the glutes relaxed? Yes there is. This is when I'm using up dog or cobra as a lumbar spine mobilization in the classroom because the student sits at a desk all day and is in lumbar flexion all day. So therefore, I'm actually trying to take it into the back for that reason. If you feel pain in the lower back when you engage the glutes this is because there is a faulty recruitment pattern happening when you engage the glutes and the spots where you're feeling it in the low back is where in essence it's over working for Glute max. We can thank sitting on our butts a good portion of the day, or stretching the hell out of our hips every single chance we get without strengthening the glutes right afterwards.

Videos coming: Common misunderstandings when it comes to glute max and yoga. You can get some background before I post the first one by checking out this article I did. What is the posterior chain? The posterior chain is simply the backside of your body and its primary muscles include the lower back, gluteus maximus (glutes), hamstrings, and calves. This area is often neglected and misunderstood. There are two main reasons why. The first reason is many people sit 8-10+ hours per day. Because of the seated position the quadriceps/psoas become adaptively short and tight, further inhibiting the glutes. The glutes then suffer amnesia to their primary role as hip stabilizer and extensor. The second reason the posterior chain is neglected is that none of these muscles are seen in the mirror. Out of sight out of mind, we only seem to notice when we are trying on jeans or the dreaded swimsuit. May be you do strength training, yoga, or running, etc … but the glutes are not reflecting all the hard work; so the question is… are you really working them? Although the posterior chain consists of the low back, glutes, hamstrings and calves, the focus here will be on the function and importance of the glutes. When the glutes become inhibited the posterior chain is not functioning properly. The low back and the hamstrings then have to take on the work of the glutes, and along with these muscles being overworked the IT Band, TFL plus the piriformis also take on an additional load, leading to a whole cascade of low back, hip, knee, ankle, and foot problems. Although yoga feels good when stretching the excessively used low back and hamstrings, the majority of poses that are used in class will over stretch the posterior chain and over work the anterior chain, exacerbating the problem the people deal with all day. This is not exclusive to yoga, there other workout programs in gyms that can be just as unbalanced. This article is going to look at the many roles of the glutes.
