I don’t really allow myself to get political in my reviews. I don’t want this to be a soapbox. I’d rather you all read my reviews, and whether or not you agree maybe you at least walk away happy. I don’t think writing a criticism or reporting on new information should be done with the intentions of pissing people off. It should just be honest and in a world where we need to fact check every article or program, I try to make it so you don’t have to do that here. That’s why I try to always stick to my own personal rule of only giving my opinion of the movie I am writing about.
In a politically divided America, liberal-minded Chris and Kai vow to each other to not to sign a new oath put forth by the President that pledges allegiance to him. Months go by and they see more and more friends sign the oath out of fear. The deadline to sign is Black Friday, but their focus is on just getting through the holiday with Chris’ conservative-minded family staying at their house.
Written, directed and starring Ike Barinholtz who is a comedic actor with a long resume of good work. This is first time directing and second time writing a feature film and he delivered a very original and well-crafted story. With that said I will say that it isn’t a story without flaws and holes. I liked the movie generally speaking, but most of my respect comes from the change of genre in an unexpected way. This movie is a goofy comedy until the second act and it then becomes a thriller in the truest sense of the word. The transition is done very well and I like the originality of the story.
