One of my areas of greatest limitation is spinal extension – backbends. In fact it took some courage to post this as IG is slathered with images of amazing backbends. But some of us do not have this range... but we still need to do put our spine through this movement. Here I am demonstrating a commonly done backbend, dhanurasana or upward bow. It is common for people to pull heels to butt and wiggle one arm then other to the feet (first position). Since working on active mobility my approach to this pose is different – in my practice and of course in my teaching. Note in the second position I am reaching with both hands at the same time, trying to touch my feet and pressing hands/feet into one another to help contract the hamstrings and glutes while working to extend my thoracic spine. The third position is then to reach for the feet – evenly rather than torqueing the spine. Try it this way. If doing it this way for the first time, you may not like it. But try to feel the difference in how the muscles are working when the movement is controlled rather than a passive stretch when not. AND... while this is important for stiff backs like mine, it is even more important for those with a very flexible spine!! YOGA FOR RUNNERS . Ben jij die hardloper die denkt: 'goh, ja yoga, zou ik ook eens (vaker) moeten doen! 🧘🏼‍♀️ ' Of 'Ik zou wat vaker mijn spieren moeten stretchen maar weet niet hoe 🤷🏼‍♀️' ? . . Voilà! Hier een eerste overzicht van mijn favoriete stretches speciaal gericht op heupen en hamstrings. Perfect voor hardlopers. Deel 2 volgt! Sla deze post op en voer ze de eerstvolgende keer na je run (of als je 's ochtends uit je bed stapt, of vlak voor je naar bed gaat) uit. Als je nog niet warm bent is het goed om met wat sun salutations (of jumping jacks) te beginnen. Probeer in elke pose ongeveer 5 rustige ademhalingen te blijven (langer mag) en vergeet de andere kant niet! Linksboven: Downward Facing Dog: belangrijk is dat de lijn van je handen naar je heupen recht is, je mag daarvoor gerust je knieën buigen, duw je heupen naar het plafond! Ik doe hier een variatie met mijn hielen van de grond, maar je mag ze voor extra stretch in je kuiten ook richting de grond bewegen. Geen probleem als je de grond niet haalt! (Lukt mij na 4 jaar ook nog steeds niet) Rechtsboven: Lizard pose. Variatie: je achterste knie op de grond of in plaats van je handen je hele onderarmen op de grond. Let op dat je rug recht blijft! Linksonder: figure 4 stretch. Je kunt ook je handen in je knieholte plaatsen. Rechtsonder: Pyramid pose. Beweeg je voorste heup naar achter en je achterste heup naar voren. Buig naar voren vanuit je heupen en houd je rug goed recht (gebruik desnoods een spiegel om dit te checken) als je niet bij de grond komt met je handen, plaats ze dan op een yoga blok, je scheenbeen of een dik boek. . Are you a runner? Runners are often reluctant to try yoga, but runners have a tremendous amount to gain from adding yoga to their fitness regimen. Yoga restores the body’s balance and symmetry through the physical postures, especially sequences that are designed specifically for runners. Many runners feel tremendous benefits even after just one yoga class, often expressing that they feel taller, their lower backs feel better, and they have greater body awareness during runs and during their daily activities. A yoga practice after racing helps to eliminate the stiffness caused by lactic acid buildup in muscle tissue. Students who force themselves to attend a yoga class the day after a marathon are amazed at the speed of their recovery. Recovery times are reduced so runners are able to get back on the road quickly and in good health. While there are no guarantees in life, a regular yoga practice is a safe bet for reducing the risk of injury or helping cure a current one. Many runners today are experiencing tremendous benefits, and the best results are from those who have made yoga part of their weekly workout routines. After some time they marvel at how injury free they have remained, regardless of the miles they run. And did not repeat the exersices that were doubled up from round to round. I will do ab yoga @aloyoga tonight. Off to work and it is a veggie day! I find instead of saying no carbs or meat. It works better for me to say yes to veggies. ~ (I M) P O S S I B L E ? ~ . . Balancing in a hand-to-hand handstand always scared the pants off me - I did not think this was possible without someone spotting me. Every time I bumped into @acroyogacoach at an event he’d convince me to give it another try. Then one day I forgot to doubt and fear, and the seemingly impossible just happened! The lesson here - if you tell yourself something won’t happen, it won’t. If you trust it will, it will. Note - things don’t necessarily happen in the time scale you might wish - I may have dreamed I was running last night but it doesn’t mean I get to lace up and run today. It does mean that trusting that my ankle will heal can support the process of getting there. You have to invest your energy in working towards a goal to be able to get there - you don’t get to sit back and wait for it to come to you (in most cases anyway!) No hand to hands in my vinyasa class at @benkandbo at 6.30pm tonight, but plenty of chance to explore possibility. Ultimamente i miei lunedì sono a base di pratiche yoga che mi aiutano ad allungare i muscoli dopo le gare del week end. Inoltre è l’unico momento in cui riesco ad allontanare tutte le tensioni della giornata 💆🏻‍♀️ Così il martedì sono di nuovo pronta per correre, magari con una seduta di allenamento la mattina all’alba e una la sera al tramonto, giusto per non farmi mancare nulla (la realtà è che non mi piace dover scegliere!) This video focuses on the moon salutation by itself. Moving through it several times, the first time with longer holds to become familiar with the poses and the transitions between. Each repetition following will gradually decrease in the hold time allowing for a deeper connection with the breath and therefore becoming more meditative. . Great for all levels 🙌🏼 . Ci concentriamo così tanto sul fuori, sull’esteriore, che spesso ci dimentichiamo che tutto ciò che accade, avviene all’interno. Siamo corpo e mente, siamo dentro e fuori. Concentrarsi solo ed esclusivamente sul corpo interrompe la connessione con ciò che invece c’è dentro di noi. Il nostro essere unici non deriva solo dalla forma fisica del nostro corpo, dalla vita che abbiamo, dalle cose che facciamo. Ma soprattutto da come sentiamo, come agiamo e come reagiamo e non reagiamo. È importante indirizzare le proprie energie, mentre vi allenate per cambiare il vostro corpo ricordatevi che prima di tutto è la mente a dover fare quel passetto in più. ~ I had a dream...~ . . I had a dream last night that I went running (currently in my 7th week out from running due to this injury so running really is starting to feel like a dream!) Ok, what I actually dreamt was that I tried to go out for a 5K run but before my ankle was ready... which meant I was doing a run/walk thang all the while knowing I shouldn’t be. I guess this is my wiser self kicking in to give me a warning in case I get any ideas! Whilst obviously part of me is desperate to get back running, another side of me recognises that I have an opportunity to use this time very wisely if I choose to. Whilst running is definitely out right now and some days walking is still causing discomfort, I am at least able to do some cross training. Anything low impact such as cycling, rowing (foot attached to something and locked in place!) enable me to have a good work out without stressing my injuries. Swimming also (although a much less loved option!) is also possible. I’ve realised that cross training can be a great compliment to running and that low impact training definitely has its place and definitely isn’t a cop out! I can do strength work - which is something that I really needed to put more time into previously but allowed to let slip. No avoiding it any longer! It’s also given time and headspace to develop my Yoga for Runners programmes. More than ever I am convinced of the importance and place of mindfulness in this. Training for a race needs physical training and mental training. Recovering from an injury takes the physical healing which can be very much supported and speeded up by tuning your mind game onto this too. Yoga for Runners, in my mind, isn’t just another excuse to work out or beast yourself, or slide a sneaky active session in on your rest day (yes we’ve all done it!) Rather, it’s an opportunity to help the body recover and restore. A place to explore Breath work and learning tools to help you maximise your breath capacity. A place to be-friend your mind so that come race day you can get your mental game on, and if injured you are in a better place to support your body’s healing process. And when I'm not doing that, it's off on my mountain bike or long dog walks. I love it, but I also understand even more the need to stop, stretch and let the body repair too. This is how I found myself adapting my personal practice to get into the areas of my body that don't always get covered in regular classes and to work out the best ways to ease tight hips, hamstrings, etc... And then, I adapted this into my trademark classes teaching Yoga for Sports. Every week I have a different focus and we work with a focus to stretch and strengthen the body. Here's a little ditty for your gluteus medius aka muscle that plays a big role in stabilising the hips as you walk, run, sit, stand etc. etc. . . Every human being needs this muscle to work well. For those who are involved in hiking, running, dancing, and any form of physical activity really, it is SUPER IMPORTANT to get to know this muscle on each side. . . It attaches to your outer pelvis + is a major support for the lower body chain. It'll do your knees, ankles and feet a great deal of good if it's in a well working condition. . . The above is easily doable every day or a few times a week... 🌼 grab a block, sturdy book or the like 🌼 plant one foot on it, pull up through the outer hip of the leg (a bit like pulling socks or tights up) + use your hands for feedback if needs be (I do!) 🌼 With your 'free leg' swing, circle or pulse out to the side (the movement need only be small) 🌼 Do your best not to 'sag' through the planted leg + hip 🌼 The gluteus medius of the standing/loaded/planted leg should be firing 🌼 Notice which is your less active side + do a few more! . .
