Deal, New Jersey
#Regram from Robert Siliato (@robertsiliato) who found these syringes and plastic in Deal this morning and collected debris from one area of the beach and reported the syringes to Deal PD.
There are no current beach closures according to NJBeaches.org, but please do be aware that, with heavy rains comes more debris.
That being said, @surfriderjerseyshore is holding an emergency beach cleanup this Sunday at Hathaway Beach in Deal starting at 10am. They ask for no children and if you see needles, please do NOT pick them up. Call the local police or Monmouth County Department of Health at 732-431-7456.
A DEP spokesperson, Larry Hajna, says that "typically the materials enter sewer systems north of the Jersey shore, flush out into the water, and drift onshore via ocean currents." It's thought that this debris was either flushed down toilets or washed into street sewers and the recent heavy rain can exacerbate the outflow.
