The symmetry of the ram impala horns always fascinated me. This ram was defending his territory against the other male competition during mating season.

The Linkwasha Camp provided a wonderful setting for both sundowners and after dinner drinks around the camp fire.

Impala alarm calls in the distance command this female leopard’s attention. She had been calling for her cub and perked up investigate. We were fortunate enough to spend a couple of hours with her as she moved through her territory calling/searching for her cub.

‘Take one on the chin’ | We watched this lioness go from a deep sleep to successfully stalking and killing a warthog piglet. Almost simultaneously, the male lion of the pride bolted from his resting spot to steal the kill from her mouth while denying her and her cubs of a snack.

African wild dog’s Latin name means “painted wolf”. We have been fortunate enough to see them on all four of our visits to Africa.

‘Welcome to Zimbabwe’ | Minutes into our hour long boat ride to our first camp in Zimbabwe, we were greeted by this bull elephant along the banks of the Zambezi river.

‘Perfect Timing’ | Elephants have the longest eye lashes in the world (approx. 5 inches) and it can be very challenging to see & photograph their eyes. The ‘Perfect Timing’ came together with our close proximity to this Bull elephant, his stare after a brief mock charge and most importantly, the position of the sun. It was the last few minutes of the day and the angle of the setting sun beautifully illuminated his eye.

Leopards are my favorite big cat to photograph, although it’s hard to beat a male lion sighting during the golden hour. We had the pleasure of joining him and his brother during the last hour of the day before they began their nightly patrol of the territory. Our guide, Goodman, suspected the fresh scar below his eye happened as a result of a recent territorial dispute.

‘Gin & Tonic time’ | The moon and Venus set simultaneously over the Zambezi river at the Ruckomechi camp in Mana Pools, Zimbabwe. It was the evening after the new moon and the moon (on the left) was only 1.3% illuminated, although the slow shutter makes it appear to be a full moon. Thanks @eddiemudzimu for allowing me to use your tripod!
