Thoughts are with all in Florida right now as Hurricane Irma heads toward them as a category 4. This first shot was taken in 2008 during a great trip to Miami’s South Beach. Hope all remain safe and the damage isn’t too bad.
The second shot was taken a little north and west of Miami, in a town called Sarasota, in October 1995. That grim mass in the distance is the edge of Hurricane Opal. I was staying in Sarasota and all week the weather channel had been predicting that it would hit right in the center of where I was staying. As it approached, that too was a category 4 hurricane. All the locals said that it would turn north before it hit us and that we shouldn’t try to evacuate as we’d end up stuck on the roads and if we stayed we’d be fine. Turns out, they were totally right. The roads were blocked solid, and at the last minute, overnight, the storm turned north and hit land near Pensacola, causing huge damage. In Sarasota we still had some damage - the beach moved several hundred feet and lots of local flooding, but nothing like it was a little to the north.
Stay safe, everyone.
